Atkins Food Pyramid
The basic recommendation of types of meals included in Atkins diet is visualized by a picture of Pyramid structure. The structure has 5 levels; each level contains the suggested types of food. The description of the 5-level Pyramid is given as follows.
At level 1 or the first phase of the overall diet progress, there are many types of food to erase from the dietary menu. In fact, it is regarded as the most difficult part of the diet. To achieve the ideal weight, one must avoid some foods including fruits, grains, bread, alcohol, starchy vegetables, and some dairy products except butter and cheese.
Based on Atkins’ calculation, a person should only eat 20 grams of Net Carbs; this amount is far less than the FDA’s 300 grams of carbohydrate recommendation. The main purpose of the level 5 (phase 1) is to improve metabolism system. If done properly, one will lose a considerable amount of weight.
It is the phase 2 of the diet; it may also be called On-going Weight Loss (OWL). Compared to the previous phase, the recommended Atkins diet foods are friendlier. A person, who performs this diet, is allowed to add more carbohydrates in the meals. The recommended foods include salad greens, asparagus, and spinach.
In total, there is a significant improvement over the amount of Net Carbs suggested on the previous phase. The person may consume up to 45 grams of Net Carbs a day. It as well suggested that phase two takes a period until the person reaches 10 pounds to go to arrive at the targeted weight.
As the level increases, more foods can be added to the menu. Atkins diet foods in level 3 include some fruits such as pears, avocados, and blueberries. Starchy vegetables and whole grains are also included. The foods should make at least 50 grams Net Carbs a day. Level 3 should be performed until a month after the person reaches the targeted weight.
